Burping on a GLP-1, by Drug: Wegovy vs Zepbound vs Mounjaro vs Ozempic
Belching is on every GLP-1 label and nobody quotes the rates. Wegovy 7%, Zepbound 4-5%, Mounjaro 3%, Ozempic 1-3% — plus what to do about it.

The short version
Belching — "eructation" on a drug label — is a listed adverse reaction for every GLP-1 and dual agonist on the market, and the rates differ enough between products to be worth knowing before you pick one. Wegovy is the outlier at 7%. Nobody publishes this comparison, so here it is, straight off the current FDA labels.

The numbers, by product
Each figure is the rate in that product's own trials against its own placebo arm. They are not head-to-head trials, so read them as four separate labels rather than a ranking.

Two things jump out.
Dose matters less than you would expect. Zepbound and Mounjaro barely move between 5 mg and 15 mg. This is not a side effect you titrate your way out of by staying low.
The weight-loss doses are worse than the diabetes doses. Wegovy at 7% against Ozempic at 1–3% is the same molecule at a higher dose. If you are choosing between a weight-management and a diabetes-labelled product, that gap is real.

When it happens
The Wegovy label states these gastrointestinal reactions were most frequently reported during dose escalation1. That matches the wider pattern: a systematic review and meta-analysis of GLP-1 receptor agonists found gastrointestinal adverse events to be the dominant safety signal across trials5.
Practically, plan for it in the week after each dose increase rather than treating it as a permanent state.
Why it happens, and why some of it smells
The mechanism is delayed gastric emptying — a core part of how these drugs work, and well characterised in the clinical literature on GLP-1 receptor agonists and tirzepatide6. Things sit longer, gas has more time to come back up.
The sulfur smell is a second mechanism layered on the first. Hydrogen sulfide is produced when gut bacteria break down sulfur-containing amino acids, with microbial cysteine degradation a dominant route7. Cysteine is abundant in protein — which is exactly what you are being told to eat more of on these drugs. That is an unhelpful collision nobody mentions.
The five-minute fix list
In rough order of how much they help, none of them a prescription:
- Split your protein across the day instead of one large serving. Same total, smaller batches.
- Smaller meals, more often. A slow stomach plus a big meal is a queue.
- Watch the high-sulfur days — eggs and red meat stacked together is the usual culprit.
- Do not lie down straight after eating.
- Plan the two or three days after your injection, and after every dose step, as the rough window.
If belching is persistent rather than post-injection, the American Gastroenterological Association publishes a clinical practice update on evaluating and managing belching, bloating and distention — meaning clinicians have a real framework for this and it is a legitimate thing to raise8.
When to stop optimising and call
Burping alone is a nuisance. Burping together with severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, a hard or distended belly, or an inability to keep fluids down is a same-day call to your clinician, not a diet-tweak problem — the same slowed gut sits behind the more serious gastrointestinal complications these labels warn about1.
